Stage Crew

On a Friday afternoon, girls in 6th form have the opportunity to participate in Stage Crew as one of the options for Friday Blocks, where they can become involved with a number of departments such as Scenic Art, Props, Costume, Lighting, Construction, Publicity and Stage Management. The department I’m in (which, in my opinion, is also the best department) is Scenic Art. In Scenic Art, we are responsible for painting the set, along with any props that are needed for the show. Stage Crew is a great way to be involved in the amazing productions put together by KEHS and KES, including Junior and Senior Productions such as ‘The Witches’ and ‘Cabaret’, as well as smaller Drama Club productions.

Production weekend is considered to be the pinnacle of Stage Crew as it is a vital part of the production process. This is where the whole of Stage Crew comes together to put the finishing touches to the set and technical details of the bigger productions such as Junior and Senior Production. Depending on how much work this is left to do, we have to stay after school on Fridays and then come in on Saturday and occasionally Sunday as well. This may seem like a lot of time to give up and can be very intense, but it is still a very rewarding experience!

As well as participating in Stage Crew on Fridays, when there is a production, we are also given the opportunity to be part of the backstage crew of the show. This is one of the most hectic yet exciting aspects of Stage Crew because you work closely with the company of the production, as well as seeing how all the hard work we put in has paid off when we receive excellent feedback from the audience!

Stage Crew is a great way to meet new people who share similar interests with you! It is joined with the boys school, who introduce their Friday blocks at Year 10, so you make friends in all different years. Each department develops into a small family eventually, which is nice as you form close bonds with everyone.

As someone who has always loved the theatre, I was excited to join Stage Crew when I entered the Sixth Form and it has been the highlight of my Fridays from the very beginning! It has given me a new perspective on theatre, providing a real life theatre experience from behind the wings, and although you have to dedicate a lot of hours when needed, it has definitely been worth seeing the amazing things we have achieved over the past two years.
